In my overall experience both as a listener and as a player, effects when playing are like garlic when cooking.....a little bit goes a long way. They may be fun to use and/or experiment with as a player but I still contend that a little bit goes a long way. Also the more basic the better overall. Unless, I find a weird sound in a multi effects pedal that just happens to augment a particular song overall clean, dirty, chorus and reverb are my basic staples on gig night and those are used sparingly.

I only use the lightest of chorus, not even any reverb, chorus give my acoustic guitar a nice fullness, almost true to the real deal, when plugged in
